(Sept. 26, 1994) - Wizards of the Coast, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the limited-edition, black-bordered DragonCon(TM) card in the third issue of its official Deckmaster(TM) magazine, The Duelist(TM) . The publication is due out in late October. The Magic: The Gathering(TM) card, called "Dragon Watcher," is illustrated by renowned science fiction and fantasy artist Michael Whelan. Originally, it was only available to 10,000 people who attended this year's DragonCon in Atlanta. The card's limited availability and access upset many players and collectors. As a result, Wizards of the Coast® decided to increase the card's circulation through The Duelist. Kathryn Haines, managing editor of The Duelist, says there are two other reasons "Dragon Watcher'' is being included with Issue #3. "We also want to increase the circulation of the magazine and our subscription base through the card, '' says Haines. "And we'd like to get more people to come into retail stores.'' The Duelist can be purchased at various stores. Another way to receive the magazine is to subscribe through the Duelists' Convocation(TM), Wizards of the Coast's official tournament league. Convocation members are guaranteed to receive one copy of the limited-edition card with their subscription to the magazine. In addition, members receive another card with the November issue of The Duelist Companion, the organization's newsletter. Anyone who joins the Convocation before November 15, 1994 is guaranteed to receive The Duelist Issue #3 and the "Dragon Watcher'' card. The "Dragon Watcher'' card is expected to help boost the circulation of The Duelist Issue #3 to around 200,000. (Issue #2 had a print run of 65,000.) Haines says the limited-edition card may eventually be obtained in other ways. "We [Wizards of the Coast] may make the "Dragon Watcher'' card available in the future, depending upon demand.''
